Bahrain
One of the more modern and liberal states in the Persian Gulf is Bahrain. Known for it's education system, diverse economy and proletariat Muslim culture, Bahrain will undoubtedly leave you with a sense of having been in a place with a history so vast, yet becoming a society with both past and present enmeshed together in a seamless, unique, and quite spectacular way.
When to go:
Since summers in Bahrain can be quiet unpleasant to those accustomed to climates beyond that of the region, we recommend planning your trip for the months of November and/or February. If you wish to avoid crowded sites and destinations, avoid the months of celebration and tradition, such as Ramadan (the Muslim time of daytime fasting), and the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
Getting there:
Travel to Bahrain is possible in a number of ways. Flights from January to June as well as October to December are less expensive than those during July to September. You can also drive directly from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain, and vice versa, by way of the King Fahd Causeway. Travel by bus for expediency (buses have their own designated lane for customs). Ferries also run from Iran to Bahrain, they take some time, but are easy on your purse strings. Note: If your passport holds an Israeli stamp, you will be denied entry.
Places to go:
Manama, the capital of Bahrain, holds an incredible museum, known as the National Museum. It contains numerous exhibits spanning 7000 years of history, with beautiful temples, which are no longer standing. Periods covered are Dilmun, Tylos, and Islamic, with highlights of Arabic calligraphy. In the Arabic community, calligraphy holds especial importance, both historic and religious in nature. An esteemed part of the museum is the collection of Korans, dating back to the 7th century.Visit the souk to take in the Bahraini marketplace. It's alluring with a bustling atmosphere, where you can bargain and haggle over just about any item. Everyday essentials, as well as unusual and original trinkets and gems are all available at the souk.Muslims as well as non-Muslims can get the chance to visit the Al-Fatih Mosque. An enormous structure, Al-Fatih Mosque is the largest building in all of Bahrain.Stop by Barbar, where you'll witness a complex of three majestic 2nd and 3rd millennium BC temples. An amazing view to behold, The temples are said to have been built as a token for Enki, the God of Wisdom and the Sweet Waters Under the Earth.Another historic landmark is the Portuguese Fort, Qal'at Al-Bahrain. This fort was discovered to have been constructed on the actual remains and rubble of previous structures. Archaeologists found that the earliest civilization to build at the site was in 2800 BC.A beautiful, quaint destination to visit is Bani Jamrah, a village known for its weavers. Tourists can witness the making of the fabrics and cloths, but it's not recommended to visit the village itself, where foreigners may not be welcome.Abu Mahir Fort is an impressive site, where a beautiful view of the Manama skyline is possible if you're allowed by your on-site escort to climb the tower.
