How to Study English

Top Ten Tips to Better English
"What is the best way to learn English?" "How can I improve my English quickly?" English teachers are continually asked these questions, and others like them, by Korean learners of English. Though many look for a quick, easy path to English excellence, there is no magical method for learning English. A great deal of effort is, of course, required. However, if the efforts you exert are channeled in the right direction rather than misdirected, as is the case for far to many Korean learners of English, the language learning process will progress faster and easier. Here are ten important things that you can do to make your language learning more effective and to get you to where you want to be in English ability as quickly as humanly possible.
Draw Up a Plan
Learning a foreign language is like taking a trip in a foreign land - if you don't know where you want to go and have no map to follow, you are likely to wander aimlessly and get nowhere fast. You must determine your English destination and select a road to get there. The language-learning strategies you decide on will depend on your language learning goal. The language skills required will certainly vary somewhat for the international businessman, the English instructor, the flight attendant, and the English translator.
Once you have determined what your end goal is in learning English, you must next determine what language skills are required to attain that goal. Then take inventory of your present level of skill in the different areas of English - listening comprehension, reading, writing, speaking, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and so forth. Determine the areas that you need to concentrate on and design a plan of study to improve in these areas. Your plan should include both short-term and long-term goals. In addition to developing a general strategy for attaining a long-term goal one, two, or three years down the road, you should also determine what you want to accomplish in the upcoming week, month, and season. Set your goals realistically and follow them to their conclusion.
Seek Out Materials
It is almost certain that the time you spend studying English in the formal English classroom will not be sufficient to attain your language goal. You must supplement this with additional materials and opportunities for practice. Speak English every chance you get - both with native English speakers and other Koreans. You can even form a small study group to practice speaking. To improve your listening ability, you can listen to English programming on cable television and radio, and you can rent video movies to watch. Audio- and video-based English programs are also available. Bookstores are filled with books for studying English, and there is a wealth of material available on the Internet for improving your English skills. Search out these materials - surf the Internet for materials, check out the movies at your neighborhood video shop, and check you radio and TV schedule.

Take In English
In order for you to improve your English as quickly as possible, you must take in as much English as possible. This should be both spoken and written English. The English that you listen to and read should not be just anything at all; it should be comprehensible input. Comprehensible input, whether written or spoken, is material that is easy for you to understand. If the material is too difficult, nothing will be understood and no learning will take place. Ideally, you should be able to understand 80-90 percent of the material that you are reading or listening to. If movies, television programs, and books and magazines produced for native English speakers are too difficult, select audio, video and print materials from the many especially prepared for the English learner. As your English level rises, gradually make the change to authentic English materials.
Round Out Your English
English is much, much more than the study of grammar rules and vocabulary that you are likely accustomed to from middle and high school English. Anyone learning a foreign language should strive to improve in each of the four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The Korean educational system leaves most students very weak in writing and speaking and weak in listening ability. New learners need to begin with the passive skills of reading and listening, but anyone who is able to read this article definitely needs to also do work in the active skills of speaking and writing. Simultaneous development of each of the four skills is complementary and helps to speed up the language-learning process.

Read, By All Means
Language teachers all over the world agree that one of the best ways to improve your language ability is to read. It is such a pity that so few Koreans do much of it - even in their mother tongue. If you ask even university English majors what they did during their summer or winter vacations, you will have a hard time finding one who has read anything in English. Extensive reading is helpful in so many ways to the language learner. One becomes more familiar with commonly used structures, vocabulary, idioms, and slang. What one learns through reading is also helpful in improving the other three skills. Read for pleasure. Select reading materials that are easy to understand (80 - 90 percent comprehensible) as well as interesting. The more you enjoy it, the more you will read; and the more you read, the more your English ability will improve. It is almost always the case that the exceptional language learner is a person who reads a lot in English - and enjoys it.
Look It Up
Every English learner should possess a good assortment of dictionaries. Most language learners have a dog-eared English-Korean dictionary from their middle and high school days, but this is not enough. For writing and speaking activities, you should have a good Korean-English dictionary. These dictionaries should, however, be used with a bit of caution as they can be misleading, and at times even incorrect. For example, the entry at »ç¶÷ says that it means everything from man, mankind, the world, company and talent to one and another, and me and wife. It is therefore a good idea for every English learner to have an English learner's dictionary. Many excellent ones are available. Not having sufficient references can only slow down the language-learning process.

Go Online
In the last few years, the Internet has become a real treasure of materials for the English language learner. If you have Internet access, make good use of it. The Internet is not good only for reading improvement. In addition to the reading material for language learners, you can practice writing with an email pen pal or at an English chat room and even take writing courses online. To improve your listening comprehension, there are now a number of listening labs available online with good quality sound files. You can now even use the Internet to sharpen your speaking skills. One of the most recent developments in the Internet is voice chatting. With this new technology, voice messages are sent back and forth much like written chat room messages.
Practice
All the suggestions made so far are useless if one does not practice. All too often language learners make big English study plans, follow them faithfully for a few days, and them quickly forget all about them. You cannot learn a foreign language if you do not put forth the required effort. You cannot sit back and expect a language teacher to do all the work for you to magically become fluent in English. You must do the practice and do it regularly. The best way to do this is to make a daily schedule and stick to it. To keep your practice interesting, vary what you do from day to day or within the day. Watch a video movie one day, discuss the movie the next day, and read a book the next; or do a little of all three the same day. Remember: practice makes perfect, but procrastination makes nothing.

Fear Not
The fear of losing face for making a mistake is so great in Korea that it often interferes with language learning. Many language learners will not speak in class nor speak to a native English speaker for fear of making a mistake and thereby losing face. It is necessary to revise this type of thinking. It is actually through making mistakes that language is learned. If you refrain from speaking, you reduce your practice and also reduce your progress. The language learner who progresses most rapidly is the one who is not afraid of making mistakes. Don't be afraid of making harmless mistakes. When you do make them, take note of them and learn from them. In this rapidly changing world, not being able to use English is fast becoming a much surer way of losing face.
Be Patient but Persist
One of the biggest problems of English language learners is that they become dissatisfied with their progress and lose interest in learning the language. The more they study, the less improvement they see. This is actually true. The larger one's reservoir of knowledge becomes, the less noticeable each additional bit of newly learned information becomes. It is like putting soy sauce into water: add a drop of soy sauce to a drop of water and the difference in color will be easily detected; but add a drop of soy sauce to a liter of water and you will not be able to tell any difference in color.
Be patient. If your are studying regularly and are following the suggestions above, you are likely improving substantially. Though you may not be able to detect the difference, others will. Be persistent. Don't give up on your English studies because mastery of the language does not come as quickly as you would like. To better see your progress, keep a record of what you learn each week. Review work that you had done a month or two earlier and see how much easier it is now. Record yourself speaking English and see how much better you sound than before. You will surely recognize that your English level is gradually approaching that of native English.
